The Nakuru County government has announced the construction of a Sh250 million modern maternity clinic to cater for the increasing number of patients.
The facility is expected to help decongest Nakuru’s referral hospital, which is already suffering an acute shortage of equipment and staff.
Nakuru’s executive member for Health, Samuel Mwaura, said the construction will be flagged off in the coming days.
“We are about to do the tendering process for the construction of the maternity hospital. We have been facing an acute shortage of incubators and staff in the county.
The number of Women who have also been giving birth at the facility is very high. We are overwhelmed by the shortage of staff,” he said.
Naivasha District Hospital medical superintendent Joseph Mburu said the proposed facility will ease congestion at the newly built maternity wing.
“Patients travel as far as Mbaruk to seek the services offered at this facility. We hope that the new hospital will help them access better health care,” he added.
The two were speaking to the press over the weekend during a visit by Nakuru First Lady Lucy Kinuthia, who challenged doctors and nurses to train new mothers on the importance of immunization.
“Majority are just ignorant. They should be sat down before they leave hospital and told the importance of having their children immunized,” she said.
