A Chinese electrical firm will next year start a multi billion solar power project in Nakuru County following the signing of a Memorandum Of Understanding between the Chinese Government and the Nakuru County Government today.
The MOU was signed by Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua and the Vice President of China’s state-owned Dong Feng Electrical Corporation-DEC Hu Waidong.
The project entails a comprehensive street lighting programme for Nakuru town, Gilgil, Naivasha, Molo and Bahati.
Addressing journalists after the signing of the MOU at in his office today, Kinuthia said that the project will go a long way towards improving security in Nakuru County.
He said that the programme will generate 50 megawatts at its completion.
The Governor said that the corporation had also expressed interest in power generation from Nakuru town’s sewerage system.
Waidong said that DEC-the largest electrical firm globally will first carry out a technical evaluation this year in order to come up with a detailed work-plan to be implemented next year.
He said that their decision to adopt the solar power project was driven by the fact that Nakuru has a lot of potential and the Jubilee Government had put a lot of emphasis on industrialisation.
The project requires 100 acres of land which Kinuthia said will be procured in due course.
