Governor Mbugua Opens WEDC International Conference

The 36th Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) International Conference was offcially opened at Njoro’s Egerton Campus by Nakuru Deputy Governor Joseph Ruto on behalf of Governor kinuthia Mbugua.
WEDC based at Loughborough University, in UK and is jointly organizing the conference with Egerton and is one of the world’s leading education, training, research and consultancy institutes concerned with improving access to infrastructure services for people in low and middle-income countries.
The theme of the conference is “Delivering Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Services in an Uncertain Environment’ and will be held until July 5 2013.
The conference has attracted over 400 delegates from over 60 countries.
The WEDC International Conference has two features which make it a unique and highly effective platform for sector learning and sharing.
Firstly, the conference has a strong practitioner focus, field based experience is shared alongside more conventional academic findings.
Secondly, participants are predominantly those who live and work in low and middle income countries.
As such knowledge and experience is shared between peers, who face similar challenges and working contexts.
The event comprises a three-day programme involving presentations and discussion of 140 peer reviewed papers.
An exhibition is running alongside the conference and external organisations are also organising and hosting side events in the evenings.
These activities will be followed by a 2 day programme (Thursday and -Friday) of capacity development workshops.
The workshops address skills development to mitigate challenges facing those involved in the provision of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services.
The programme also includes a “Careers Compass” event will enable early career WASH professionals to understand sector employment opportunities, link and also engage with potential employers.
The outputs of the conference include: proceedings that will document experiences for reflection and learning.
Papers are published can be downloaded freely and form a permanent resource.
Participants will enhance their professional development through the discussion and exchange of experience and also the capacity development programme.
The conference has attracted participants from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds, including national and local government, policy makers, non-governmental organisations, the private sector and faith-based groups.
The linkages and networking potential built through this interdisciplinary platform is enormous and help break down barriers, encourage collaborative partnerships and thus increase effectiveness of service delivery in the sector.
