SPEECH BY THE GOVERNOR NAKURU COUNTY H.E. KINUTHIA MBUGUA DURING THE LAUNCH OF GOtv SIGNAL AT THE RIFT VALLEY SPORTS CLUB ON WEDNESDAY, 19th JUNE, 2013 AT 12:30 PM.
GOVERNOR MBUGUA WAS REPRESENTED BY CHIEF GUEST MS POLLYNE OWOKO
NAKURU COUNTY MINISTER FOR
INFORMATION, COMMUNICATIONS AND e-GOVERNMENT
The General Manager, MultiChoice Kenya
The General Manager, GOtv,
Members of the Press,
Distinguish…ed guests,
Ladies and gentlemen,
Good afternoon.
Today marks yet another important milestone in the country’s march towards Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting. Indeed, it’s a great honor that we are gathered here this afternoon to mark the launch of the Nakuru digital television courtesy of GOtv.
As a County, we are always proud when a new player enters the market place, especially the electronic media market, because it confirms to us that the television industry is growing and that the consumers will now get more diversity and choice in their viewership. It’s also the realization of a dream that has been made possible through commitments and determination of all the players in this field.
I note that GOtv has rolled out digital services in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret and now Nakuru with other areas to be covered in the rest of the country, hopefully by the end of the year.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The advantages that come with the use of the digital TV compared to current analogue television are immense. Kenyans are embracing the new technology and enjoying quality viewership and choice as well as diversity in programming. The switch to digital broadcasting will enable existing technologies to connect the unconnected in remote communities and close the digital divide.
Let me take this opportunity to assure you that the County is committed to providing a conducive environment for investors like you, who are part of the realization of its development goals.
In this regard, I would like to urge the media to continue taking a prominent role towards educating and informing the public on the need to embrace this new development and switch to digital broadcasting.
This is because members of the public also have a huge role to play in this transition period and unless the consumers understand the digital migration process and what they need to do, the switchover will not be a success.
I would like to assure Kenyans and all stakeholders that the County has put in place bold measures to ensure the migration proceeds smoothly.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
In conclusion, allow me to point out that digital migration is not just about improving the quality of television but represents an opportunity to improve the lives of Kenyans through a unique medium that will touch and influence them. I am confident that with this understanding, GOtv should be able to face the challenges ahead. On behalf of the Government, I assure you we shall be there to support your efforts as you roll out your services all over Kenya. We wish you all the best in your endeavors.
With those remarks, it is now my pleasure to declare the GOtv service in Nakuru officially launched.
I propose a toast;
- To Kenya’s march towards Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting.
-To new DTT technology like GOtv and enjoying quality viewership and choice a
