Safaricom inks U.S. $1.2 million dollar technology deal with G.E.

The deal will capacitate the mobile phone net-work to run efficiently during power outages
NAIROBI (Xinhua) –
safKenya ’s largest mobile phone provider Safaricom on Tuesday signed 1.2 million U.S. dollar agreement with General Electric’s subsidiary GE Energy Story for the sustainable power during prolonged drought.
The deal which… was signed in Nairobi will see GE supply Safaricom with 48 GE Durathon batteries which will capacitate the mobile phone network to run efficiently during power outages.
“Kenya is growing rapidly and to ensure that we have an enabling environment that supports sustainable growth, we need to adopt innovative ways to overcome inhibiting challenges such as interrupted power supply.
The GE Durathon battery will achieve just that for Safaricom and its customers,” GE President and CEO for Africa, Jay Ireland said in Nairobi .
Ireland said GE is committed to partnering with stakeholders to broaden the innovation play in Kenya and the rest of Africa . He said sustainable power supply continues to be one of Africa’s critical challenges and that Kenya is no exception.
